A Great (Sometimes Overlooked) Conference Opportunity

I go to and participate in a lot of conferences. Conference about HR, Recruiting, Business, Finance, etc. I love the whole “idea” of conferences: everyone gets together and discusses shared problems, solutions, and generally gets a lot of information and resources to take back and use back at work or in life in general. Not always are conferences able to meet that expectation or the “idea” they originally started out to be.

One conference I look forward to every year is the IACPR Global Conference. The IACPR stands for the International Association for Corporate and Professional Recruitment, and I am a bit biased, because I have been actively involved in IACPR for the better part of the last 20 years. Why? Because IACPR is truly in a league of its own. The organization is small… the conference usually gets between 100-150 total participants, but it is mighty. The IACPR is made up of people who are either a corporate Talent Acquisition leader who is responsible for recruitment and retention of executives, or a retained executive search professional. Also welcomed are management consultants and academic professionals who are involved in support of the recruitment and retention of executives.

The conference is unique in a lot of ways. As I indicated before, it is small and very intimate. Generally the conference is held in a single large room made up of banquet table rounds. Speakers and panels change in front of the room, but otherwise, everyone participates in everything together. The content is always top-notch. With authentically real and direct speakers. All the speakers and panelists are solid practitioners or experts in their field who share not only what has worked for them, but also mistakes that they have made along the way. There is also a really unique twist: since both corporate Talent Acquisition and retained search professionals are in the room at the same time, there are often more than one perspective on how the topics and content are received. Since IACPR has a strict non-solicitation clause in its membership, the playing field is even, and everyone in the room is there to talk about the issues of the day. More than at any other conference, audience participation is the highlight of the sessions: audience members raise their hands often and vigorously. The idea of constructive dialogue and the ability to agree and disagree respectfully is tantamount. It is a great collegial environment, that I look forward to every year.

Now, as I said, I am deeply biased about IACPR. Not only am I the Vice President of National Membership for the association (if you have not received a call or email me about twisting your arm about membership yet…hold your breath!), but I have also been involved with the programming of the annual conference for the last several years. And, I must say, I am very proud of the conference.

This year, the conference will be held in New York, NY on October 23-25, 2011. Riviera Advisors clients, friends, and others get a discount on the conference registration. The info you need is below. I hope to see you there. If you have any questions, I am happy to respond.
